  5. I open Internet Explorer but my computer doesn't try and dial up. Why?
  • Why Doesn't My Modem Dial?
    • Make sure the modem is plugged in and turned on. Verify that the modem has a phone number to dial. Make sure the phone line is plugged into the correct jack on the back of the modem.

  • Why do I get an error message when I try and dial up to Psyberware?
Why do I get disconnected from from the internet?
    • One possible cause of dial-up problems is from a mistyped username or password. Try erasing both your username and password and retyping them. Your username should be all lowercase. Passwords are almost always all lowercase as well.

A common cause of disconnections is a setting in Outlook Express. Open Outlook Express and go to the Tools menu to Options. Click on the Connection Tab (In older versions of Outlook Express, this tab may be
called Dial-up instead). Make sure the checkbox next to "Hang up after sending and receiving" is NOT checked. If it IS checked, your computer will disconnect from the internet every time it checks email.

Psyberware also has an idle timeout feature which disconnects you if your internet connection has been idle for 20 minutes. If you've spent a long time reading a web page or replying to an email this may be why you were disconnected. If your computer is disconnected while downloading a file, this is NOT the reason. If two people log onto Psyberware with the same username and password at the same time, both will be disconnected. If you want to be able to have two people dialed up simultaneously, you.ll need to contact us about purchasing an extra login.

Modems are also fairly lousy at guessing a reliable speed they can communicate at. They may choose an unstable 48k connection rather than a stable 44k connection. We can usually improve the reliability of your
connection by specifying which protocols your modem should use, and at what speeds. . These settings are different for different types of modems though. Please give us a call at (916)645-4567 and we'll work with
      you to improve your connections!

Modems are also very sensitive to phone line quality. A little static on your phone line (the phone company may call it interference or EMI) can cause serious problems with your internet connection. If you hear
conversations happening on other phone lines (The telephone companies call this crosstalk), that can also cause problems. Modems are also sensitive to some things we can't even notice, like the voltage on your telephone line. If it's too low, you may have trouble connecting. Telephone companies don't really support your using a modem at all, so telling them about your slow or unstable modem connections will probably not help. If you can give them something more tangible such as static on the line or crosstalk, you're more likely to get a response.

  • I have a 56K modem. Why Why does my 56K Modem Connect At Less Than 56K?
    • All of our dial-up numbers are 56k numbers. However, several things can affect your connection speed.

First of all, 56K modems don't ever connect at 56K. The fastest speed one will achieve is 53K. If your modem reports a speed higher than 53K, it is most likely reporting the speed your modem is talking to your computer
instead of the speed your modem is talking to our modem.

Your distance from the telephone company's central office or remote terminal is the biggest cause of slower speeds. If you're more than about 3 miles away, you will not get speeds more 28k. This is simply a limitation of your phone lines.

Sometimes certain developments such as Lincoln Hills will have a sort of line-sharing system (for instance, Pair Gain) installed, which is invisible to the consumer but limits Dial-up connection speeds. If your
phone line is going through a system like this, you will not get speeds more than 28.8.

  • Why Do I Get An Error When Trying To Go To A Web Page?
    • Several things can cause this problem.

Is your computer dialing up to the internet? Do you hear it dial? You can check this by going to the tools menu to "Internet Options". Click the Connection tab. Make sure "Always dial my default connection" is selected. Click OK. Shut down your computer, turn it back on, and try again.

Can you get to other web pages? If so, it may be an issue with the specific web page you're trying to reach. Sometimes, a company with internet backbones such as Sprint will have trouble. If this happens, one may be able to get to half the pages on the internet, but not the other half. If this is the case, there's nothing to do except wait.

Sometimes your computer can get confused and think it 's dialed up when it isn't Try restarting your computer and see if the problem goes away.

  • I open Internet Explorer but my computer doesn't try and dial up. Why?
    • If Internet Explorer is set to work offline, it will not try and dial up to the internet. To check this, click on the File menu. If the "Work Offline" option is checked, this is the problem. Click on "Work Offline". Close Internet explorer and open it again.

If your computer is not set to automatically dial up to the internet, opening Internet Explorer will not cause it to dial. To check this, click on the Tools menu, and choose "Internet Options". Click on the "Connection" tab. Make sure the option marked "Always dial my default connection" is chosen.

Sometimes, Windows can have glitches like this that are fixable by restarting your computer. Shut your computer down and restart it normally.
